Phase-out of incandescent light bulbs
  • The incandescent light bulb, one of the most venerable inventions of its era will be phased off the U.S. market beginning in 2012 under the new energy law. The federal government enacted the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 in December 2007, requiring all general-purpose light bulbs that produce 310–2600 lumens of light to be 30% more energy efficient than current incandescent bulbs by 2012 to 2014. The efficiency standards will start with 100-watt bulbs in January 2012 and end with 40-watt bulbs in January 2014.

Utah Designers aid Lakeview Hospital

By Louise R. Shaw
BOUNTIFUL — They’re a small group but they’ve got a big vision. And though they’ve only been together a few years, they’ve already had an impact.

The Utah Designers League Association is made up of interior designers from the South Davis area, as well as those interested in marketing, in furniture moving and in alternative health.

The 19 members sponsored last fall’s Designer Showcase Fall Tour, and recently presented the proceeds – a check for $4,500 – to the Lakeview Hospital Auxiliary.

“Our mission is to give back to the community,” said Robert McArthur, last year’s president. McArthur started the home tour in 2007 and donated the earnings to help pay medical expenses for Carly Mossman, whose mother died giving birth and who has multiple health concerns.

“All the money’s given to the organization we sponsor,” he said, crediting those who donate printing and advertising and the volunteers who put in hundreds of hours.

In accepting the donation for the hospital auxiliary, Laurel Lindsay said the money donated in the past had been used for scholarships for some of the junior volunteers that work at the hospital, and for a new golf cart for people who need help getting from the parking lot to the hospital. This year’s donation was also used in part for scholarships and sub-for-Santa gifts.

Association members plan to continue the tradition, and have scheduled this year’s tour for Sept. 10 and 11 and are already lining up homes around the area.

This year’s fund-raiser is slated to benefit Circle the Wagons, a project established by Vickie Walker, whose husband died and whose son was injured in the Trolley Square shootings. The group supplies police departments and social workers with kits to deliver to victims in the case of catastrophic events in their lives.

2009 Tour A Success

Thank you for contributing to the 2009 Designer Showcase Fall Tour! Whether you were a participant, homeowner or volunteer, our 2009 tour was a success. Our annual event raised money for the Lakeview Women's Auxiliary. A check for $4,500 was presented to Laurel Lindsay, Auxiliary representative, at a luncheon yesterday in Bountiful.

"Thank you to the UDLA for their support of our organization," Laurel said. "The money we received was used to help struggling family members of some of our hospital employees. We also used it for scholarships and are excited to apply the rest of the donation to other various needs at the hospital."

The Utah Designer's League Association holds it's annual Home Tour the second weekend of every September. The 2010 event will be held September 10-11. Please check our website often for more information.

2009 Tour Features Designer's Own Homes

Join the Utah Designer’s League, Association, UDLA, for the 2nd Annual Designer Showcase Homes Fall Tour September 11-12, 2009.

What makes the Designer Showcase Homes Fall Tour unique is that unlike other home tours, most of the homes are inhabited and were designed - some through new construction and extensive remodeling - with real living in mind. This tour specifically showcases the design work of South Davis County architects, house plan designers, and interior designers.

This year's self-guided tour features seven homes including designer's own homes.

Proceeds from this year’s event are used to support the Lakeview Hospital Auxiliary in Bountiful, Utah. Lakeview Hospital Auxiliary raises funds for much needed hospital equipment, families in need and scholarships.

Tickets can be purchased for a $10 minimum donation. Each ticket allows one-time admittance into all homes anytime during the two-day event. Tickets are available online, at the door of each home or can be purchased at the following locations. For more information call: 801-292-1512.
